Driving down to upstate

Freezing rain, gale force winds, and snow storms – my British Columbia tour had it all. I’d never seen Vancouver’s firs and cedars covered in white.

I managed to move through the necessary international airports, with only some delays, slipping in and out right between the worst of the weather.

After five days in a hotel in Montreal, doing the Business of Folk Music at the Folk Alliance International conference, I’m preparing for two shows coming up in upstate New York, in Akron and Binghamton. I’ve got a couple of new songs to share and a determination to tug at the mid-winter darkness.

Snow storms and surprises

Touring in January can be a gamble. That’s why it was especially heartwarming to see so many full rooms on my recent dates in the Northeast USA.

It was a real treat to sing some harmonies with Jesse Terry at the first show of 2019 in Teaneck, NJ at Ethical Brew.

My show in Bethesda, MD had to be cancelled due to a snow storm! The first gig casualty of winter – a risk we all take – but it’s always better to be safe when the roads get slippery. With my unexpected time off in Teaneck, I popped over to Ron Olesko‘s radio show “Traditions” for a chat and some live music.

The Reston/Herndon Folk Club was a delight and remains the only folk club I know of that takes place in a 24-hour diner.

I spent a few days relaxing near the Susquehanna River, before sharing the stage with Susan Cattaneo in Darlington, MD for the wonderful folks at Deek Creek Coffeehouse.

Finally, I went to Washington, DC for the first time to accept my Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest award and perform my Silver Award-winning song, Not So Silent, at the event. Much to my surprise, I discovered I had also won the prestigious Director’s Award! Many thanks to the Songwriters’ Association of Washington for this honour.
